Vanderbilt baseball held a moment of silence for late superfan Danny “Goose” Jones prior to its home opener against Central Arkansas on Tuesday.
Jones, who was known for traveling to numerous road games and waving a “VandyBoys” flag, died on Feb. 7 at the age of 70. Coach Tim Corbin was among those who attended his funeral, where Jones was buried in a Vanderbilt-themed casket.
The PA announcer recognized Jones’ dedication in attending away games prior to the national anthem. The Commodores (2-1) began their season at the College Baseball Showdown in Arlington, Texas, before returning home to face the Bears.
Preacher Franklin, one of two “Vandy whistlers,” told The Tennessean on Sunday that the VandyBoys flag was signed by the attendees at Jones’ funeral and that he hoped for Jones’ daughter to have the flag.
After Tuesday’s game and another contest against UAB on Wednesday, Vanderbilt faces UCLA in a series this weekend.
